Walney's Winter

Last Winter (2010) shaped up to be one of the snowiest in the region's history, had 77" for the season in my area, little more 3 times the average. Not anxious for a repeat performance, this year's weather is setting a few distinctions for itself.

December 2010 was the coldest in many years and January 2011 is probably going to be long remembered for the unique terrible storm which came fast and furious.

Either way, Winter is it's own unique beauty. I've gotten to like photographing in winter because you can see the designs of trees (without leaves), birds, and sometimes wildlife you normally would not see in other seasons.

Winter's Northern Cardinal

One of the beauties of Winter here is the Northern Cardinal. A few times, I have come home from work and found upwards to 20 Northern Cardinals in my backyard feeding.

The bright red color of the bird cheers up the dull colors of winter and especially during a winter storm.

The wildlife gardening that I maintain throughout the warmer months in my backyard attracts the Cardinals as well as other birds. The Cardinals tend to stay around all year.

This image was taken during the beginning of a storm last winter.

It Snowed- Last Night

It snowed last night- was a bad storm. Came up very fast and no matter how much you tried to prepare for the storm, it was hard to be sure and be home safe. Many friends were stranded in their cars for hours. Some, didn't get home until the next day.

This image was taken after a storm last January. The early morning light combining with the bright of the snow created a bluish effect.

In the Winter

In the Winter, I tend to hibernate. I don't like the cold weather and having to bundle up just to go for a quick walk or to have "emergency" supplies in your car, "just in case." Or, having to pay attention to the weather forecasts all the time so you are aware of any ice or snowstorms headed our way. I tend to hibernate. I don't want to move or go anywhere cold. So, I become deprived of being outside all the time during the winter months.

But, it doesn't last long. Somewhere along the way, 20 degrees is cold, 30 degrees becomes comfortable, 40 degrees is a heat wave, grab the bathing suit! Even though I can't really venture out in my bathing suit, I'm able to bundle up a little less and enjoy being outside for awhile.

So I do and photograph. Anyway, as my friend is teaching me, winter is beautiful.

Walney's Winter

Trees in the winter can create a fascinating artistic design. There are usually no leaves to hide the trees beautiful branches from the huge trunks to the various branches.

Ice and Snow and Freezing Rain

Today's wintry weather causes me to think about this image. We've got ice, freezing rain, a touch of snow and more freezing rain. It's a mess.

However, to me, this image is beautiful in the way it simplifies the wintry weather and turns it into beauty.

Winter in Northern Virginia

An early snow storm last winter created a beautiful contrast between the fall and winter seasons. Some of the trees still had there fall leaves on them when a snow storm hit. This image shows the beauty that happens sometimes when the seasons are changing.

Continuing in Fall Season - One More Post

I had so much fun photographing fall colors this year, that I want to share two more images before moving on to another subject, which will probably be something along the lines of winter, imagine that, huh?!!

A stroll through a Northern Virginia park rendered this image.
This is titled, "Stream Through Fall Colors".

Ever pay any attention to the underside of leaves? I hadn't either until I met a photographer who lived in the West Virginia Mountains and was constantly amazed at the "different" side of nature. We took a few shots and I quickly learned that I was missing quite a bit. Anyway, it took me awhile to get a good image.

This is titled "Underneath the Leaves."

Fall at Walney Nature Center

I love to take walks carrying my camera at Walney Nature Center. I always see something different even though I might walk the same trail. And, that's the beauty of nature photography, each time you visit a place, you can see something different whether it's because you didn't see it before or maybe the lighting is different or even the weather.

FIRE!!!!!!!! In the Fall Season

I have quite a creative imagination. Probably not very wild, but many have pointed out that I see things that most do not.

This would be the case with this image. As I drove my car around the parking lot, parked, got out, I looked towards the trees and they looked like they were on "FIRE!!"

Hence the name. "FIRE!!"

Continuing in Fall Season

Yes, I know it's winter. But, I still have a few more fall images I would like to share with you. A friend taught me to find the beauty in the fall and winter seasons. After all her hard work, I began to really see the beauty this year.

I took this at Walney Nature Center, Centreville, VA.

Continuing in Fall Season

I was walking my dog Noah one morning and had taken my camera with me. As I rounded a corner, this tree's beauty popped out at me!

Yes, it's a plain tree, probably a Silver Maple, but it's color for fall had a simple beauty to it. Thought I would share it with you today.

Happy 01/01/11

A friend of mine's son wrote the date out, 01/01/11 or 1-1-11, thought it was interesting to see the numbers line up in this fashion. The next date will be 11-1-11 and 11-11-11.

Either way you write the date, I hope you have a great new 2011!!

I am posting another fall image today as I had quite a bit of fun photographing fall this year. I was concerned about this year's weather extremes hurting the possibility of getting any good images but that didn't prove to be true.

This image was taken while walking my dog one Saturday morning. The morning light and the fall color mixed just enough to make this group of trees colorful.
